Understanding "TOSLINK"

TOSLINK: A digital optical audio connection originally developed by Toshiba. It sends sound signals as pulses of light through a fiber-optic cable.

Optical Cable: The cable used for TOSLINK connections. It is immune to electrical interference because it carries light, not electricity.

S/PDIF: The digital audio standard often used by TOSLINK to transmit stereo or compressed surround sound.

PCM: An uncompressed digital audio format. TOSLINK commonly supports two-channel PCM audio.

Dolby Digital: A compressed surround-sound format that TOSLINK can usually transmit.

DTS: Another compressed surround-sound format supported by many TOSLINK connections.

Connector: The square-shaped plug at the end of a TOSLINK cable.

Bandwidth: TOSLINK has limited bandwidth compared with HDMI, so it cannot carry advanced formats like Dolby TrueHD or full Dolby Atmos.

Use: TOSLINK is often used with TVs, soundbars, receivers, CD players, and game consoles.
