What is "Optical Modem"

Optical Modem: An optical modem is a communication device that converts digital electrical signals from computers, routers, or network equipment into optical signals that can travel through fiber-optic cables and converts incoming light signals back into digital data. It is commonly used in fiber broadband, enterprise networks, data centers, and long-distance telecommunications. Compared with traditional copper-based modems, an optical modem offers higher bandwidth, lower signal loss, longer transmission distances, and greater resistance to electromagnetic interference. It may also be called an optical network terminal (ONT), optical network unit (ONU), or fiber modem, depending on the network design. Key parts include optical transmitters, receivers, signal processors, and ports for fiber and Ethernet connections. Its main function is to provide fast, stable, and reliable access between a user’s local network and a service provider’s fiber network. In homes, it connects optical fiber to Wi-Fi routers, enabling efficient internet, voice, and video services.
