Optical Modem: An optical modem is a communication device that converts digital electrical signals from computers, routers, or network equipment into optical signals that can travel through fiber-optic cables and converts incoming light signals back into digital data. Compared with traditional copper-based modems, an optical modem offers higher bandwidth, lower signal loss, longer transmission distances, and greater resistance to electromagnetic interference. It may also be called an optical network terminal (ONT), optical network unit (ONU), or fiber modem, depending on the network design. Key parts include optical transmitters, receivers, signal processors, and ports for fiber and Ethernet connections.
